Modality identifies the method of delivery for a curricular offering, including courses, programs, and specializations. It describes whether instruction occurs in person, online, or through a combination of in-person and online instruction.
The University recognizes the following modalities:
In Person
Instruction occurs at a specified physical location on specified days and times. Less than 25% of instruction is delivered online.
In Person & Online Asynchronous
Instruction combines in-person meetings on specified days and times with online asynchronous instruction. The schedule of instruction and weekly time commitment for online asynchronous instruction must be clear to students in the syllabus on the first day of class. Neither modality may account for less than 25% of total instructional time.
In Person & Online Synchronous
Instruction combines in-person and online meetings on specified days and times. Neither modality may account for less than 25% of total instructional time.
Online Synchronous
All instruction occurs online at specified days and times.
Online Synchronous & Asynchronous
All instruction occurs online and combines synchronous meetings on specified days and times with asynchronous instruction. The schedule of instruction and weekly time commitment for online asynchronous instruction must be clear to students in the syllabus. Neither modality may account for less than 25% of total instructional time.
Online Asynchronous
All instruction occurs online with no required synchronous meetings at specified days and times, except for optional online office hours or meetings. The weekly time commitment for online asynchronous instruction must be clear to students in the syllabus.
